After the first few days at the new job I have to say it hasn’t been as bad as I thought. I have also discovered that Australian unions are a little bit nuts. I’m not working too hard so far at my new job (cleaning out a powerplant for their scheduled maintenance). I have operated a remote controlled watercanon most of the time which means looking through a hole and steering the watercanon to the dirtiest place with a joystick. There is a lot of dead time waiting for permits and other things and the breaks are fairly extensive. The unions have the whole place under almost total control, I get paid a good hourly salary + money for lunch + money to cover the cost of travelling to work + 30 min pay each way for travel time to and from work (=1h/day). I have to say that to me that is taking it a bit too far (but I’m happy for the money). If everything goes as planned I will earn enough money for a trip back home, pay off my car and get a new visa. Since I’m working 7am-7pm 6 days a week there isn’t much time left over but for a month that’s ok.
