It’s been really hot this weekend, but no surf. On friday night I went with Bec to the Queenscliff music festival, and had a really nice time. Queenscliff music festival is an all Australian music festival, with a big variety of music but mainly focusing on blues and folk music. I had a really nice night even if it felt like I was going to turn in to a little puddle of sweat during the first consert. Today we had planned to spend the day on the beach, surfing and relaxing. Unfortunately the sun was hiding behind clouds and the ocean was totally flat so we only had a bit over an hour on the beach relaxing and reading a bit. In one way it was probably good that there was no surf, I have managed to strain a muscle on the right side of my ribs so I can’t really do much. It’s a little bit of a worry since I’m doing my surf bronze (a kind of beach/surf life saving course) on wednesday-friday but hopefully it’ll be ok till then.
Time flies, and in about a month Me and Bec will move in with Anders, a Danish guy who works at the same restaurant as Bec. Meg, the girl who has lived with me and Bec in Torquay, has moved back home to Penola over summer to work. This means that we now have the house to ourselves (and that we have to pay more rent), Unfortunately being two instead of three people in the house have also ment that it’s now messier than before. Our lease on the house runs out just after New Year and Anders’ girlfriend is moving to Melbourne to work so that worked out perfectly for everyone. They have had a 4 bedroom house to themselves so Meg might move in with us when she gets back here in Feb but we don’t know. I’m doing about 5 lessons a week at the surfschool, I really enjoy it and it’s nice to have a bit of extra money. I’m looking to buy a car since that’s more or less the only way to get around here and since I’m doing quite a lot of surfclasses in Anglesea about 15km from Torquay having one car is not really enough. I’m looking to spend maybe $500 (~2800SEK) so it’ll be a pretty old and shitty car just to get around here, we’ll see what I’ll find
It’s getting closer to summer here even if the weather is pretty unpredictable here. During the last weeks we the weather has mixed between sunny and 35′, windy and 12′ or massive rains creating floods on the streets, so you never really know what’s going to happen. Well to everyone back in Sweden I can only say -Enjoy the snow ![]()
Went to the horse races on Saturday, was quite a lot of fun even if my betting wasn’t a great success. The whole weekend evolved around the races. Me and Bec went back to her parents farm on friday arvo (afternoon) because it was closer to the races from there. Three of Becs friends: Anne, Jude and Jess also stayed there. The next morning we where supposed to leave pretty early to get a good spot at the races, but the weather was crap and Bec ha lost her voice and could only produce some little squeking noices, so she decided to stay in bed and catch up with us later. When we finally got to the races the weather was better, just a few showers every now and then. The racecourse was just a racecourse in the middle of the farmland, no big stands or anything so we parked the car next to the track so we could sit on the boot and look and drink beer (the most important thing I soon realised) without getting wet. The tradition is that everyone get dressed up in fancy dresses and stuff but because of the weather the cloathing was a bit more casual. I only placed a few bets but since I don’t know much about Australian race horses it was pretty random, but fun, and I didn’t loose any big amounts (”Surfey Pete” was my only winner). We had planned to stay in Hamilton, the nearest big town, over night, but since Bec was sick she took the car and we went back to Mortlake, where her farm is. We picked up Matt in Geelong on the way back on Sunday and him and me went for a pretty crappy surf, but it’s still always nice to get in the water.
Cruising along as usual, nothing really exciting going on, but soon I might get my 3:rd job. Life’s not extremely exciting at the moment, some of you might think that since I’m in Australia on the other side of the world, exciting things must happen all the time, but unfortunately, no. I’m into a normal life here with work, dinner making, bills, washing, tv and everything else. Still haven’t got to many of my own friends but I enjoy both my jobs, especially the surfinstructor one, and meeting a lot of people. Today Graham (the owner of the surf school) asked me about my web-design skills, as I wrote something about it on my resume and it seems like he’s willing to pay me a bit to fix up their webpage. Tomorrow I’m also off to a restaurant where one of Meg’s (my housemate) friends work and they need some new staff to help out at functions and stuff so there might be a day now and then in it, we’ll see. Bec just finished her exams and now has about 4 months off from uni, pretty good. She’s got a new job doing camps with disabled kids, so she’ll probably do 4-5 week-long camps over summer, and work as a waiter at the restaurant the rest of the time. This Saturday I’ll go to the Duncard Races, my first experience of Aussie Horse Racing. Apparently you dress up a bit, go there with an eskie (cool bag) full of beer, wine n things, get drunk, meet a lot of people and maybe see a horse sometime during the day. I’ll tell you more about it later.
I’m starting to get into my surfing instructing, have had three lessons so far, I’m also having a little cold at the moment but nothing special.
Bec’s having her first of two exams for this semester, hope she’s doing ok. I have put some mixed pic up from the last month here, enjoy, and thanks to everyone who writes in the guestbook ![]()
My first class as a surf instructor got delayed 2 days due to a massive rainstorm, but on Friday the weather was better. The class went ok and I’m scheduled for about 4 classes a week over the next three weeks.
